Growing: Likes full sun and well-drained soil. Slugs love it for its first 1-2 years of life, so I go above and beyond to protect it from them it’s first year. Once it’s 2 years old, it develops constituents that deter slugs and it’s incredibly hardy. Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting.
Medicinal uses: It’s been one of the top herbs in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The root is used in a strong tea as an adaptogen (stress modulator) and is a phenomenal immunostimulant. The plant has to be at least 3 years old before it can be used as a medicine.
Permaculture Uses: Nitrogen fixing perennial.
