Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria)
Latin name: Agrimonia eupatoria
Plant Family: Rose (Rosaceae)
Lifespan: Perennial
Origin: Europe
Growing: Prefers full sun but can be grown in the shade as well. In fact, I’ve grown it in practically every environment, with the exception of overly saturated soil, and had great success. It’s an extremely resilient plant.
Edibility: It can be used as a tea but it’s high tannin content can cause nausea in large doses.
Medicinal uses: Traditionally, it’s been used as a dewormer. It’s high tannin content also makes it useful topically to reduce inflammation. Internally, many herbalists use it for headaches caused by emotional stress. It’s also a bitter herb which is great for digestion and improving liver function.
Permaculture Uses: To to it’s resiliency, it can be used to restore poor soils in areas where not a lot of other plants will grow. It’s roots are gathered in the fall to make a yellow dye.
